How Are Petrol Prices Determined in Malaysia?

Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM)

Malaysia uses the APM to set weekly fuel prices based on international crude oil prices (Brent/MOPS), refining costs, and the USD/MYR exchange rate. Prices are announced every Wednesday and take effect Thursday through the following Wednesday.

BUDI Subsidy Programme

The BUDI (Bantuan Utiliti Diesel Individu) programme was expanded to include RON95 petrol. Eligible Malaysians (B40 and M40 income groups) pay a fixed subsidised rate of RM1.99/litre. T20 earners and foreign vehicles pay the unsubsidised market rate. Eligibility is verified via MyKad-linked vehicle registration.

Why Are Prices Different Each Week?

International oil prices fluctuate based on global supply and demand, OPEC production decisions, geopolitical events, and currency movements. When crude oil rises or the Ringgit weakens against the USD, Malaysian petrol prices increase accordingly.

Maintains steady speed on highways, saving 7-14% fuel.

Every 50kg of extra weight increases fuel consumption by 1-2%.

Clean air filters and fresh engine oil improve fuel efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the petrol price in Malaysia this week?
Petrol prices are updated weekly every Wednesday. Our calculator pulls live data from data.gov.my so you always see the latest RON95, RON97, and diesel prices. BUDI95 is fixed at RM1.99/litre for eligible Malaysians.
What is the difference between BUDI95 and unsubsidised RON95?
BUDI95 is the subsidised price (RM1.99/L) available to B40 and M40 Malaysians with MyKad-registered vehicles. The unsubsidised RON95 price is the market rate, which is significantly higher and applies to T20 earners and foreign vehicles.
How do I calculate my monthly petrol cost?
Monthly cost = (L/100km ÷ 100) × daily km × days per week × 4.33 × price per litre. Use our calculator above for instant results with live prices.
Is RON97 worth it over RON95?
For most cars, no. RON95 is sufficient unless your engine specifically requires RON97 (check your owner's manual). The price premium of RON97 doesn't translate to better fuel economy for standard engines.
How can I reduce my monthly petrol bill?
Use BUDI95 if eligible, get a petrol cashback credit card (3-8% savings), maintain proper tyre pressure, drive smoothly, and avoid unnecessary idling. These combined can save RM100-300/month.
