When Does PTPTN Repayment Start?

12 Months After Graduation

PTPTN gives you a 12-month grace period after completing your studies. During this time, no repayment is required. After this period, you'll receive a Jadual Bayaran Balik (JBB) detailing your monthly instalment.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Settle Within 12 Months

If you can settle the full loan within the 12-month grace period, PTPTN waives 100% of the Ujrah fee. You only pay back the original principal. For a RM30,000 loan over 10 years, that's RM3,000 saved.

PTPTN Travel Ban 2026 โ€” What You Need to Know

Under the updated enforcement measures, PTPTN can impose an overseas travel restriction on borrowers who meet all of these criteria:

  • 1. No repayment made for more than 5 consecutive years
  • 2. Monthly income exceeds RM6,000
  • 3. No approved restructuring or deferment in place

To avoid the travel ban, make at least minimum payments or apply for a loan restructuring if you're facing financial difficulties. Contact PTPTN at 03-2193 3000 or visit any PTPTN branch.

Using EPF to Repay PTPTN โ€” Is It Worth It?

EPF members can withdraw from Akaun Sejahtera (Account 2) to repay PTPTN. But should you?

โœ… Pros

  • โ€ข Reduces principal immediately
  • โ€ข Lowers total Ujrah/interest charges
  • โ€ข Shortens repayment period

โŒ Cons

  • โ€ข EPF earns ~5-6% dividends vs PTPTN's 1% Ujrah
  • โ€ข Reduces your retirement savings
  • โ€ข May not be the best financial move if on Ujrah

Verdict: If you're on the Conventional scheme (3%), using EPF makes sense since you save more than the EPF dividends. For Ujrah (1%), it's generally better to keep your money in EPF and make regular PTPTN payments instead.

What If You Can't Afford PTPTN Repayments?

1. Apply for restructuring

Extend your repayment period to reduce monthly instalments. Visit any PTPTN branch with supporting documents.

2. Request deferment

If you're unemployed, pursuing further studies, or facing hardship, you may qualify for temporary deferment.

3. Pay minimum amount

Even RM50/month shows good faith and prevents you from being classified as a defaulter.

4. Consolidate debts

If you have multiple debts, a personal loan at lower interest can consolidate everything into one payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is my PTPTN monthly repayment?โ–ผ
It depends on your total loan, scheme (Ujrah 1% or Conventional 3%), and repayment period. Use the calculator above for an instant estimate. PTPTN recommends 5-8% of your gross income.
What's the difference between Ujrah and Conventional?โ–ผ
Ujrah charges 1%/year (Shariah-compliant), Conventional charges 3%/year. On a RM30K loan over 10 years, Ujrah saves you RM6,000. All new loans are Ujrah; older borrowers can convert.
When do I start repaying?โ–ผ
12 months after graduation. Settle in full within this grace period to get 100% Ujrah fee waiver โ€” only pay back the principal.
What happens if I don't repay?โ–ผ
After 5+ years of no payment with income > RM6,000/month: potential travel ban. You'll also be CCRIS/CTOS blacklisted, affecting all future loan and credit applications.
Can I use EPF to repay PTPTN?โ–ผ
Yes, withdraw from EPF Akaun Sejahtera. Best for Conventional scheme (3%) borrowers. For Ujrah (1%), keeping money in EPF earning 5-6% dividends is usually smarter.
