Hours Since First Drink

The body metabolises ~0.015% BAC per hour. Time matters more than coffee, food, or cold showers.

Malaysia's Drink Driving Law — What You Need to Know

Malaysia has one of Asia's strictest drink driving laws. The legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit is 0.05% — equal to the EU standard and stricter than the UK and US (0.08%). Enforcement is via Section 45A and Section 45 of the Land Public Transport Act (LTA), with mandatory jail terms and licence bans for repeat offenders.

Section 45A — BAC 0.05%–0.08%

  • Fine: RM1,000 to RM10,000
  • Jail: up to 12 months
  • Licence suspension at court's discretion

Section 45 — BAC over 0.08% or causing harm

  • Fine: RM10,000 to RM50,000
  • Mandatory jail: 1 to 10 years
  • Licence ban: minimum 5 years to lifetime

How the Widmark Formula Works

BAC% = (alcohol consumed in grams × 100) ÷ (body weight in grams × r) − 0.015 × hours

Where r is the Widmark constant (body water fraction):

  • 0.68 for males — higher water content
  • 0.55 for females — lower water content, higher BAC per drink

Example: A 70kg male drinking 2 cans of Tiger beer 320ml @ 5% (25.2g alcohol total) over 2 hours: BAC = 25.2 ÷ (70 × 10 × 0.68) − 0.015 × 2 = 0.053% − 0.030% = 0.023% — under the 0.05% limit. Same drinks for a 60kg female: BAC = 25.2 ÷ (60 × 10 × 0.55) − 0.030 = 0.076% − 0.030% = 0.046% — borderline.

FAQ — BAC Calculator Malaysia

What is the legal alcohol limit for driving in Malaysia?
The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit in Malaysia is 0.05% (50mg alcohol per 100mL of blood) or 22 micrograms per 100mL of breath, set by the Land Transport Act Section 45A. This is stricter than the UK and US limit of 0.08%. Driving above 0.05% is a criminal offence with fines from RM1,000 to RM10,000 and possible jail up to 12 months. Driving above 0.08% triggers Section 45 — RM10,000–RM50,000 fine and up to 5 years jail.
How many drinks until I'm over the Malaysia legal limit?
It depends on body weight, sex, and time elapsed. As a rough guide: a 70kg male reaches Malaysia's 0.05% limit after about 2.5 standard drinks (e.g., 2.5 cans of Tiger beer 320ml at 5%) consumed within an hour. A 60kg female reaches it after about 1.5 standard drinks. The body metabolises alcohol at roughly 0.015% per hour, so 1 standard drink takes 60–90 minutes to clear. Use the calculator above for an accurate estimate.
How long until I'm sober after drinking in Malaysia?
The body metabolises alcohol at about 0.015% BAC per hour. To go from 0.10% BAC to 0.00% takes roughly 6.5 hours; from 0.05% to 0.00% takes about 3.5 hours. Coffee, cold showers, and food do NOT speed up alcohol metabolism — only time does. If you drink heavily at night, you may still be over the legal limit the next morning. The calculator above shows hours-to-zero based on your inputs.
What are the penalties for drink driving in Malaysia 2026?
Section 45A LTA (BAC 0.05%–0.08%): fine RM1,000–RM10,000, jail up to 12 months, licence suspension. Section 45 LTA (BAC over 0.08% or causing death/injury): fine RM10,000–RM50,000, mandatory jail 1–10 years, licence ban minimum 5 years to lifetime. PDRM has been ramping up RTD road blocks since 2023. Insurance premiums spike 2–3× after a drink-driving conviction — compare via Bjak to find the lowest renewal quote.
Can I drive after 1 beer in Malaysia?
For most adults, yes — 1 standard beer (Tiger 320ml at 5% = 12.6g alcohol) puts a 70kg male at approximately 0.026% BAC, well under the 0.05% legal limit. A 50kg female reaches around 0.046% from 1 beer — close to the limit. However, 'safe to drive legally' is not the same as 'safe to drive' — even small amounts of alcohol slow reaction time. The calculator above gives your specific estimate based on body weight and sex.
Is BAC the same as breath alcohol in Malaysia?
No, but they correlate. Police use breathalyser tests measuring micrograms (μg) of alcohol per 100mL of breath. Malaysia's legal threshold is 22μg/100mL breath, which corresponds to ~0.05% blood alcohol (50mg/100mL). The conversion factor is approximately 2,300:1 (blood to breath). If a breathalyser reads above 22μg/100mL, police can arrest under Section 45A LTA — a confirmation blood test is then conducted at the police station.
