⚠️ PIDM Disclaimer

Rows marked Not PIDM are investment accounts, not fixed deposits — principal and returns are not guaranteed. Standard PIDM-protected FDs are covered up to RM250,000 per depositor per bank.

⚠️ Watch out for "headline" rates that hide a catch

Some FD comparisons list BSN's Term Deposit-i bundle at 6.00% p.a. — but this requires bundling with a BSN SSP savings account, which earns a much lower rate. Your blended effective return is significantly less than 6%. Always check the fine print, not just the headline number.

FD vs Money Market Fund — What's the Difference?

If you're placing an FD for yield, money market funds are worth comparing. All three land around 3.5–4% p.a., but the mechanics — and the protection — differ significantly:

What Moomoo Cash Plus actually is

Cash Plus is not a deposit and not a Moomoo product — it is a wrapper that puts your idle cash into one of three approved money market funds: United Money Market Fund-Class R, Maybank Retail Money Market-I Fund or Eastspring Investments Islamic Income Fund-Class R. The headline “up to 6% p.a.” is the fund's own yield plus a Moomoo subsidy, and it runs for the first 30 days on a first subscription of RM500 or more. After that you earn the underlying fund yield, which has averaged around 3.5% p.a.

The trade-off that matters: an FD is PIDM-protected up to RM250,000 and your principal cannot fall. A money market fund — through Moomoo, FSMOne or anyone else — is not PIDM-protected and the principal is not guaranteed. Money market funds are low-risk, not no-risk. Bottom line

For short-term parking with guaranteed principal, FD wins — nothing else carries PIDM cover. For flexibility (withdraw anytime) at a similar or better yield, a money market fund via Moomoo Cash Plus or FSMOne is worth considering, especially if you dislike being locked in for 12 months.

How to Apply for FD Promotions Online

  1. Log in to your bank's mobile app or website (e.g. CIMB Clicks, AmOnline, HLB Connect)
  2. Navigate to Deposits → Fixed Deposit / Term Deposit
  3. Select the promotional product (TIA-i, eFD-i, etc.) — not the standard FD
  4. Choose tenure and enter amount (must meet minimum)
  5. Review rate shown — confirm it matches the promotional rate
  6. Confirm placement. Policy sent by email/SMS.

Most banks require online/app placements for promotional rates. Counter rates are typically lower.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which bank has the highest FD rate in Malaysia right now?
Alliance Bank Term Deposit-i (Sri Petaling branch) offers the highest confirmed rate at 4.38% p.a. for 6 months, but requires an in-person branch visit. For an online or in-app placement with no branch visit, CIMB Term Investment Account-i (TIA-i) at 3.50-3.75% p.a. (min RM1,000) is the highest — but note this is an investment account, not a PIDM-protected deposit: neither principal nor return is guaranteed. The highest PIDM-protected deposit you can place online is Maybank e-Islamic Fixed Deposit-i (eIFD-i) at 3.40-3.70% p.a. Rates change frequently and campaigns expire — always check the bank's own promo page before placing.
Which bank is best for FD in Malaysia 2026?
For the highest confirmed rate, Alliance Bank Term Deposit-i (Sri Petaling branch) leads at 4.38% p.a. For the lowest entry point, CIMB Term Investment Account-i (TIA-i) accepts from RM1,000. Alliance Bank Term Deposit-i (Sri Petaling branch) runs the longest, until 31 Oct 2026. Weigh the rate against the minimum deposit and whether you can place it online.
Will FD interest rates increase in Malaysia in 2026?
Bank Negara Malaysia's Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) was last cut to 2.75% in July 2025 and has held steady since. A lower OPR generally pushes FD board rates down over time, though banks still run short-term promotional campaigns above board rate to attract fresh funds. There's no signal of a near-term OPR hike, so promotional FD rates are more likely to narrow than rise.
Is CIMB TIA-i a fixed deposit? Is it PIDM protected?
No. An account named Term Investment Account-i (TIA-i) is a commodity-linked investment account, not a fixed deposit. PIDM does not cover it, and neither principal nor return is guaranteed — the rate is indicative, not promised. It usually behaves like an FD and quotes a similar rate, which is what makes the difference easy to miss. Among the campaigns confirmed running above, that applies to CIMB Term Investment Account-i (TIA-i) (3.50-3.75%). Note that one bank can offer both at once: CIMB's eFD/-i is a PIDM-protected deposit while its TIA-i is not, and MBSB's TD-i is protected while its TIA-i is not — in both cases the higher advertised rate is the unprotected one.
What FD options are available for senior citizens in Malaysia?
Several banks run senior-specific FD products: Public Bank's Golden 50 PLUS Fixed Deposit and Hong Leong's Senior Savers Flexi FD both offer preferential rates or flexible withdrawal terms for depositors aged 50 and above. These are separate from the standard promotional campaigns above — check with the bank directly for current senior rates.
What is the minimum deposit for FD promotions in Malaysia?
Across the campaigns confirmed running: Alliance Bank Term Deposit-i (Sri Petaling branch) Branch visit required; CIMB Term Investment Account-i (TIA-i) RM1,000; Maybank e-Islamic Fixed Deposit-i (eIFD-i) RM1,000 online / RM10,000 branch; Public Bank PLUS Fixed Deposit RM5,000; CIMB eFixed Deposit/-i (eFD/-i) RM1,000. Minimums usually apply to fresh funds — money already sitting with that bank often does not qualify.
FD vs money market fund — which is better?
FD: principal guaranteed, PIDM protected (up to RM250k), locked-in for tenure (3–12 months), 3.40–4.38% p.a. on campaigns confirmed running. Money market fund (via Moomoo Cash Plus or FSMOne): ~3.5–4.0% p.a., daily liquidity, no lock-in, minimum RM0.01 on Moomoo Cash Plus and RM100 on FSMOne, but principal is not guaranteed and there is no PIDM cover. FD wins for safety and certainty; money market wins for flexibility.
Is Moomoo Cash Plus better than an FD?
It depends on which risk you care about. Moomoo Cash Plus routes idle cash into one of three money market funds (United Money Market Fund-Class R, Maybank Retail Money Market-I Fund, or Eastspring Investments Islamic Income Fund-Class R) and has averaged around 3.5% p.a., with a promotional rate of up to 6% p.a. for the first 30 days on a first subscription of RM500 or more. That beats most board-rate FDs and you can redeem any day. But Cash Plus is not a deposit: it is not PIDM-protected and the principal is not guaranteed, whereas an FD is covered up to RM250,000 per bank. Use an FD for money you cannot afford to see fall; use a money market fund for flexibility.
Do FD promotion rates apply for renewal too?
No. Promotional rates almost always apply to the first placement only, or to new/incremental funds not already with that bank. Upon maturity, your FD auto-renews at the standard board rate (~1.75–2.65% p.a. depending on bank) unless you manually re-apply for a new promotion. Always re-shop at maturity.
